Five Chicago Hospitals Score Low for Patient Safety

A recent report from the non-profit health care consumer advocacy organization Leapfrog issued D-ratings for five hospitals in Chicago in terms of patient safety. Leapfrog grades hospitals biannually based on 28 criteria regarding safety, including hygiene, physician staffing for intensive care units, and reports of patient injuries, including bed sores and falls.

The five hospitals that received a D grade from Leapfrog are:

  • Jackson Park;
  • Loretto;
  • Stroger;
  • Mount Sinai; and
  • Weiss Memorial.

Overall, the state of Illinois ranks 14th in the United States for patient protection and safety. Leaprog gave 42 Illinois hospital A grades, while 30 hospitals received Bs, whereas 33 hospitals earned Cs. Patients at hospitals with D grades and lower face an increased risk to their health than those at higher rated hospitals.

According to Leapfrog, a rate of 3.2 patients out of 1,000 died due to preventable injuries at A-grade hospitals, while 6.2 out of 1,000 patients died at D-grade hospitals or lower.

It is important to note that some of the states were not graded as Leapfrog did not have sufficient federal data on some facilities. According to Leapfrog’s president and CEO, Leah Binder, “It doesn’t matter if you have the greatest surgeon in the world, if you get an infection or there’s an error in the medications you’re given, you’ll be harmed or even killed from those problems.”

Hospital grades are published on Leapfrog’s webpage and is made readily available to purchasers and consumers, transparency vendors, regional and national health plans, and researchers.
