New mothers in BIPOC communities have long been at a disproportionately high risk of suffering birth injuries. The issue has been tied to inconsistent access to reliable medical care before, during, and after childbirth. In a recent announcement, the Biden Administration hopes to help.

The White House announced its first “Maternal Health Day of Action,” which brought together legislators, Cabinet members, and even celebrities who wanted to spread awareness of the nation’s maternal health crisis. Vice President Kamala Harris, who acted as the keynote speaker, said there will be a new initiative to rate hospitals based on the quality of the care provided to new and expecting mothers. If a hospital or care center earns a high rating, then it can officially be called “Birthing-Friendly.”

The renewed campaign to improve maternal campaign is not designed to only benefit our nation, though. In a show of goodwill, more than $150 million will be used to improve hospitals around the world. A good portion of the funds has been provided by various companies, corporations, and charities.

To name a few of the organizations teaming up with the White House for this initiative:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield Association
  • CVS
  • Lyft
  • Pampers
  • Uber

Furthermore, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it will create new guidelines for states to follow that would allow postpartum Medicaid coverage to apply for up to 12 months instead of the standard 60 days. This option should become available in April 2022.
