This past weekend, Beam Legal Team’s Attorney Ryan Timoney and Managing Paralegal Brittany Votruba had the honor of attending the Special Olympics Illinois qualifiers to support one of our former clients, Khalil, as he competed in two events.
From Legal Victory to Athletic Achievement
We are thrilled to report that Khalil took gold in the 50-meter run, qualifying him for the State 2025 Summer Games this June at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal. Khalil also participated in the softball throw event.
Though nonverbal, Khalil clearly understood his first-place achievement and beamed with pride. Our team won Khalil’s birth injury case in May 2018, so it’s deeply rewarding to see him thriving and achieving new milestones.
Khalil’s story began with a challenging start to life. Following a 2-day labor induction at a Chicago area hospital, he suffered profound hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) when nurses overdosed his mother with Pitocin, administering the maximum dose despite signs of fetal distress. Compounding this error, medical staff failed to call for a doctor who could have performed a timely C-section. Khalil had to be transferred to another facility, where he remained in the NICU for two weeks.
Today, Khalil uses a speaking device to help him communicate. He continues to make remarkable progress with the support of his medical care team, family, school, and through participation in empowering events like the Special Olympics.
