Problems That May Occur During Labor & Delivery
Countless pregnancies occur every year without problems. Unfortunately, there are some that go the entire pregnancy and problems arise during labor and delivery that create significant complications for the baby and/or mother.
Knowing some of the problems that can occur during labor and delivery can help mothers recognize the legal options should a baby be born with a birth injury. You deserve to know what to expect every step of the way, so you can get the justice you need.
- Shoulder dystocia – This occurs when the baby’s shoulders get stuck behind the mother’s pubic bone and must be pulled out of the birth canal
- Umbilical cord issues – Two of the major problems that occur with umbilical cords during labor and delivery are nuchal cord (when the umbilical cord wraps around the neck of the baby) and prolapsed umbilical cord (when the umbilical cord is faster out of the birth canal than the baby)
- Prolonged labor – Prolonged labor can be a serious problem as it may result in oxygen deprivation, which can lead to brain injuries and serious conditions
- Breech positioning – There are multiple ways breech positioning can occur, but they all result the same; the baby is not head down before delivery and must be re-positioned
In any of these situations, the potential cause can fall back on medical negligence. Either the doctor does something to cause trauma or they fail to take action to prevent an issue from occurring—and they may be held accountable for such.
