Attorneys Jack Beam and Matt Patterson, of Beam Legal Team, LLC, represented a family in their birth injury case. The Finance Committee of the Cook County Board of Commissioners recently approved a $14 million settlement, a figure which is expected to cover lifelong care for the family’s daughter.

The plaintiff in this case was, “the family of a girl who suffered severe brain damage due to the care her mother received while in labor at Stroger Hospital,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The child is now 14 years old and is still living with the effects of the hospital’s negligence.

Her mother went into labor in 2005. At the time, she was exhibiting the typical signs of placental abruption, a condition in which the placenta detaches from the uterus. Placental abruption is a pregnancy complication that can cause oxygen loss and nutrient deficiency in babies, and very low blood pressure in mothers. It can be treated with rapid, emergency interference. The mother complained of severe pain, a common symptom of placental abruption. Her baby also had an abnormal heart rate during delivery. The medical staff of Stroger Hospital in Chicago did nothing to address these issues, and the resulting oxygen loss lead to the infant’s lifelong brain damage.

The $14 million settlement approval achieved some justice for a family who has suffered from the negligence of Stroger Hospital’s doctors and staff.
